HMCS TECUMSEH Band FAQs

Do I have to be a music student or professional musician to join?
No. We have part-time musicians from all walks of life, including engineers, accountants, and a lawyer, as well as a professional tympanist and a touring singer/songwriter. But we all share a love of concert band music.
How well do I have to play my instrument?
We expect a level equivalent to Grade 3 Conservatory upon entry.
Will I get to go on a ship?
Yes, a number of our members have sailed on various ships, including the brand-new Orcas, for training weekends. However, "musician" is not a regular ship-board position.
How does the Tuition Reimbursement Plan work?
We will pay up to $8,000 (50% of your tuition, books and other costs, up to $2,000, for each completed year up to 4 years) towards an initial degree in any discipline, or post-secondary training related to music. Military requirements include completion of Basic and continuous service during that year. You can apply upon completion of each year.
How long is Basic Training?
Including basic seamanship, your initial training is 10 weeks, and is held at CFB Borden, ON.
What summer employment opportunities exist?
Aside from your initial Basic, you can attend the School of Music in CFB Borden in Ontario. Positions are also available in the National Band of the Naval Reserve, which tours across various parts of Canada every summer. Additional employment opportunities include leadership courses, and there are also positions as instructors both at the School and Naval Reserve training facilities for qualified members.
We are located at HMCS TECUMSEH, 1820 - 24th Street SW, Calgary AB T2T 0G6 CANADA.
